Cooking in an Umbrian Home

(Option: Customized Itineraries, Walking Tours)
Umbria, Italy - 3 nights
Available year round

Learn to cook with an Italian family who will show you the secrets of Umbrian cuisine. Your hostess has been conducting cooking courses for many years and invites you into her restored nineteenth century country house for day cooking classes or residential cooking programs. You can either choose to arrive on your own so you will have your own vehicle (the non-escorted tour) or if you choose not to have a vehicle you will be picked up at the train station and be accompanied during your tours and wine tasting.

You will feel right at home at this lovely piece of heaven in Umbria located 15 miles from Perugia. The cooking courses, which take place in a large and comfortable kitchen, begin at 5:00 pm (with a little break for a bruschetta and a wine tasting). For dinner you will feast on what you have learned to prepare, along with some wonderful regional wines.

Usually the menus depend on the fresh vegetables of the season. Your hostess can teach you how to make a handmade fresh pasta like fettucine or potatoes gnocchi or anything with pizza dough like calzone, foccacia, pizza, all kinds of antipasti and desserts (tiramisù, chocolate mousse, semifreddo or panna cotta) and all the masterpieces of Italian cooking.

ITINERARY

Day One

Depending on what option you choose, afternoon arrival after 2:30pm to the home with either your own car or with a transfer from Perugia Train Station. You will have time to relax with an Italian espresso. Before starting the class the teacher will give you a folder with the menus and the recipes of the dishes you will prepare in the two days of cooking classes.

Cooking class begins at 5pm. You will learn how to cook little appetizers, filled vegetables and many kinds of bruschetta with tastings of different types of cheeses and olive oils. Class is followed by dinner with wine in the garden at 8pm.

Day Two

Breakfast with a cappuccino, local products, fruit, bread and prosciutto. If you want you can walk in the countryside or take a bike and explore the area.

Depending on if you'd like the non escorted tour or the escorted tour, today is a half day visit to Perugia, either on your own (we will provide directions and suggestions) OR you can be escorted on this tour with your host.

Your second cooking course will be at 5pm followed by dinner at 8pm. You will learn how to prepare an entire dinner that you will later enjoy. An Italian dinner begins with antipasti (appetizers) of vegetables with green sauce and patè or eggplants with mozzarella. A primo, or first course, a deep-dish plate of soup, risotto, or pasta of one sort or another. The primo is followed by a secondo, a fish, meat, egg or vegetable-based main course with a side dish chosen to complement it (green salad with tomatoes, zucchini or boiled vegetables). Dinner usually ends with fresh fruit or a dessert (Italian ice cream, tiramisù…)

Day Three

Breakfast with a cappuccino, local products, fruit, bread and prosciutto.

Today is either a non-escorted or escorted full day tour to Assisi followed by a wine tasting. The wine tasting consists of a light lunch in a wine cellar in the area (15 minutes away). You will taste 5 different red and white wines each paired with a snack, and you will visit the beautiful ancient wine cellar with the owner as your guide.

Day Four

Breakfast with a cappuccino, local products, fruit, bread and prosciutto. If you want you can walk in the countryside or take a bike ride.

Departure from the villa either with your own vehicle or if you have chosen the escorted tour, you will be transferred to Perugia Train Station.

Buon viaggio!

CLIENT REMARKS

Roberta F., New Haven, Connecticut

"Dear Jo-Ann - We had the best day and all went perfectly ...thanks to our GPS system, otherwise, we would be in Romania---the wine tasting was delightful, and the ceramic visit was awesome (and costly--but the stuff I bought is gorgeous)--and then a really wonderful evening with Christina, her sister and niece and the sister's husband ... the food we made was delicious and we enjoyed dining with the family. Thank you for all the arrangements, as the day was perfect ... We really loved Umbria--all in all a great trip."
